An article written in The Telegraph on 1st November 2018, cited the fact that there were almost 6,000,000 new or long-standing cases of stress; anxiety or depression in 2017/18. This resulted in a total of 15.4 million working days being lost, up from 12.5 million in 2016/17. The article continues by stating that this accounts for 57.3% of all working days lost to illness, according to figures released by the Health and Safety Executive.
The second most prevalent workplace illnesses were Musculoskeletal disorders, with 469,000 workers suffering from new or long-standing musculoskeletal conditions in 2017/18, accounting for 6.6 million days lost to illness.
Chancellor Philip Hammond, in the 2018 Autumn Budget said that he would seek to fund a new mental health service, there have been reports by the Trade Unions and others that employers need to do more.
This is all very well, I am sure you are thinking, but what of the cost?
Well, with 15.4 Million working days lost in 2017/18 as a result of the anxiety and stress-related conditions, and 6.6 million days lost to musculoskeletal conditions, this is costing Employers, including you, a great deal of money! So, anything that is spent on alleviating / reducing these conditions for your employees is actually to your advantage and can thus POSITIVELY AFFECT your bottom line rather than ADVERSELY!
One of the services we offer, which we have carried out with great success for small business owners themselves over the past five years, is our Health and Wellness Check-up.
This consists of an initial meeting, either in person or by Skype, by Emily Flint and Obi C Agor, with both the Directors of the company, as well as employees, where a number of specific questions are asked to ascertain their current overall state of health and wellbeing.
Emily created the questions over a number of years, using both the principles of the 6,000-year old Indian science of Ayurveda, together with the 5,000-year old Chinese Science of the Five-Elements Weaknesses System. The latter grew out of Ayurveda as a result of the meeting between Chinese and Indian Scientists back in the days of the Silk Trails between the two countries. (Dr. Bala Manyam, a neurologist and professor emeritus at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, was interviewed in an article about the facts of Ayurveda and the scientific basis to this 6,000-year-old Indian Science. Out of the Five Elements, an aspect of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), came Qigong, which is also one of our key specialities through Obi C Agor, a long-time Practitioner of this Practice.
The questionnaires give us the exact information that is required to assess where each individual is in terms of their overall health: physical; mental; emotional and spiritual.
We then prepare bespoke reports for each person and meet with them to discuss the findings and the best way forward for them in terms of changes that would be best for them to make – from dietary changes (i.e. eating the best types of foods for their unique Mind-Body Make-up); through Meditation and,Qigong as well as whether or not Counselling with Obi C Agor would also be beneficial to deal with any stress-related situations / conditions in their lives.
