There are a number of different types of Obsidian, all of which are strongly protective stones.   Some work in a gentler manner; however, Black Obsidian in particular, can be sometimes harsh in its ability to cut through what needs to be removed and left behind, so must be used with care. 

Obsidian is a form of volcanic glass, and produces a shield against any sort of negativity, be-it blocking psychic attack; absorbing negative energies from the environment, or drawing out mental stress and tension from the mind and body.

It is hugely stimulating in terms of generating growth on all levels, urging us to go deep within and pull out what is no longer required, before branching out into the unknown and exploring new frontiers.   It is thus excellent at bringing clarity to the mind and helps to clear away confusion.
It helps you realise who you really are: a spiritual being having a human experience, and puts troubles and blocks into perspective, by enabling us to dissolve emotional blockages and ancient traumas, even from past lives.
It promotes the qualities of strength and compassion, and aids us to detox our bodies physically as well as mentally, thus also helping our digestive system to come back into a state of balance, too.
It has also been know the help to reduce arthritis pain, joint problems and cramps, as well as warming the extremities.

Black Obsidian – This is a highly protective stone and wards away bad energy and psychic attack. When used in healing, it is really important to take great care as it can bring up negative emotions and recollections from the past, including past lives. Therefore it is best to use it in conjunction with Clear Quartz, which helps to ground and enable us to understand what is being revealed. When used with care, it can draw together scattered thoughts and energy, promoting emotional release. When meditated with, it show us our true selves and enables us to release that which no longer serves.
